Cornelius Bignell was elected as councillor of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in 1930 and served until 1944. He became the Chief in 1945 and served until 1965. Throughout his life Bignell was involved in numerous activist organizations to support indigenous life in Manitoba all while working full time as a highway worker for the province.
